How do you welcome a king?

How do you welcome Jesus?

The final ‘Stay and Play’ service for the 2022 Lent season, focussed on the story of Jesus’ triumphal entry into Jerusalem on a donkey.

Jesus told two of His disciples, “Go to the village ahead of you, and as you enter it, you will find a colt tied there…Untie it and bring it here.  If anyone asks you, ‘Why are you untying it?’ tell him, ‘The Lord needs it’.

They brought it to Jesus, threw their cloaks on the colt and put Jesus on it.  As he went along, people spread their cloaks on the road.

When he came near the place where the road goes down the Mount of Olives, the whole crowd of disciples began joyfully to praise God in loud voices for all the miracles they had seen.

‘Blessed is the king who comes in the name of the Lord.’

(Luke 19:30-38)

The youngsters crafted some palm branches to wave joyfully, and donkey masks to wear as they re-enacted the Bible story.

Each family had an opportunity to make a Holy Week box, full of symbolic items representing Jesus’ journey from His entry into Jerusalem through to Easter Day.  By opening the box daily, the family is helped to accompany Jesus during the last few days of His earthly existence.
